AI for Irish retail: customer service and call-centre costs
Where the time goes in a shop or a small support team, and a practical way to draft replies. No invented industry averages.
The cost is usually someone’s time
In a small Irish shop, customer service is rarely a separate call centre with a published cost per call. It is the person on the floor, or the owner in the evening, answering “where is my order?”, explaining a return, or writing the same reply again.
A dedicated call centre is a different cost: seats, software, and the minutes staff spend on repeat questions. This page does not put a euro figure on that. Those numbers belong to your own roster and your own phone bill. What AI can do, honestly, is draft the repeat replies so a person spends the minutes on the awkward cases.
A person still checks the draft before it is sent. Customer names, order numbers, payment details and anything that identifies a person should not be pasted into a public chatbot.
A 5-point prompt for a customer reply
The AI for Retail webinar delivered for Retail Ireland walked retail staff through a 5-point prompt approach. The same five points work for a customer email or for notes after a call:
Role — a retail customer-service assistant for this shop.
Context — what the customer asked, with personal details left out.
Outcome — a short reply they can send, or a list of what to check first.
Audience — the customer, in plain language.
Success Criteria — accurate to your returns policy, under a length you choose, and ready for a person to edit.
From 23 attendee responses to the AI for Retail webinar delivered for Retail Ireland.
The average likelihood to recommend was 8.9/10. Every score was 7 or higher, and 15 of 23 scored 9 or 10. All 23 rated the materials positively for being clear, well-structured and easy to understand (19 ‘Very positive’, 4 ‘Somewhat positive’). All 23 gave a positive rating on whether the content supported their day-to-day work (14 ‘Very positive’, 9 ‘Somewhat positive’).
Very well put together slides along with good examples of real world uses. I found the 5 point approach to be a very interesting approach that I will be using in my role going forward

If you want the practice, not only the idea
The 6-Week AI Adoption Programme is 30 daily tasks of about 15 minutes, emailed each weekday, using your own work in Microsoft 365 Copilot. It costs €595 + VAT. You can start any time. Each person needs a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot licence, which is separate.
Whether a grant will pay for training is a different question. Grants and supports for AI training in Ireland lists what the official pages actually say, and tells you to check eligibility.
